The Hospital That Was Built With A Bat
Baseball's immortal Ty Cobb made this memorial to his parents possible, donating $100,000 toward the construction of the modern twenty-four bed hospital designed to meet the health care needs of the people of his hometown and surrounding rural northeast Georgia.
The Royston Record described the
new facility as "one of the most modern and best equipped hospitals
that has been built under the Hill Burton (Federal Act) in the state of
Georgia," containing "the latest equipment... that could be bought."
Ty Cobb, the "Georgia Peach," grew
up in Royston. Still known as the greatest baseball player of all time,
he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936 with 98 percent of the
vote. He died in 1961, and was placed to rest in the family mausoleum in
Royston.
